ATTENTION ALL WRITERS, PHOTOJOURNALISTS AND VIDEOGRAPHERS - IOM invites you to submit positive stories of migrants contributing or making positive impact in South African communities. We are looking for real stories of migrants touching lives. Contributors stand a chance to WIN AWESOME PRIZES courtesy of our sponsors every month. Statistics are just numbers, they do not tell migrant stories. People do. Let South Africa and the world know how the current generation of migrants is touching this land of hope and opportunity

These stories are also aimed at promoting promote peace and diversity by enabling South African communities and migrants to recognize that we are all – or have been at some point – migrants, and that migration should be therefore celebrated as part of our existence.

By also highlighting these positive stories, we hope this campaign will make it easier for host communities to accept migrants.


The Campaign

‘I AM A MIGRANT’ Migrant Stories is an initiative by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).


Entry is FREE and may be submitted from anywhere in South Africa.

Entrant Identity

Entries are welcome from everyone irrespective of their country of origin.


Stories can be written, photo stories or video documentaries and must be in English. Only one entry will be allowed per person and should be your original work. Written stories must not exceed 500 words and multimedia (video and photo stories) may not exceed 5 minutes. Alterations cannot be made to entries after they have been submitted. Entries should not be obscene, offensive, defamatory or libelous. IOM reserves the right to publish of not publish any story.

Confirmation of entries will be emailed at the time of submission.


The copyright of each story remains with the author. In the case that story is selected for publication, by submitting an entry, the Entrant grants a non-exclusive worldwide license to the International Organization for Migration to publish the story (and any background information supplied by the entrant) in any digital or print format and on the IOM website and its Social Media pages.


The International Organization for Migration accepts no liability to any user of this site or any third party for any damage or loss suffered as a consequence of submission of stories.

The International Organization for Migration cannot accept responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any author.

The International Organization for Migration reserves the right to amend these Rules where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond The International Organization for Migration’s control.
